ST is launching today the BlueNRG-LP, the first Bluetooth Low Energy SoC to support 128 concurrent connections. It is also our first device to receive the Bluetooth Low Energy 5.2 certification. The BlueNRG-LP supports features such as Long Range, 2 Mbps transfers, and advertisement extensions, to name a few. Additionally, it draws from previous architectures to offer the broadest dynamic range ever on an ST Bluetooth chip. To achieve such a level of performance and optimization, our teams focused on the SoC’s radio and the microcontroller. The latter is now a Cortex-M0+ running at 64 MHz and it uses 64 KB of RAM. Comparatively, the BlueNRG-1 and BlueNRG-2 rely on a Cortex-M0 at 32 MHz and 24 KB of RAM. The new device also has a one-time programmable memory area for security purposes.

The outdoor sensor unit(s) for automatic home or building HVAC systems provide outdoor data from one or multiple bearings (North, East, West, South) to a master actuator. This can be one or all of the following data:

  • Outdoor air quality (OAQ according to the Environmental Protection Agency)
  • Temperature and relative humidity (degrees, percentage)
  • Light/Sun (lux)
  • Barometric pressure (mbar)
This is a reference design for a versatile Internet of Things (IoT) sensor board solution. It targets applications in industrial predictive maintenance, smart home/IoT appliances with gesture recognition, wearables (activity tracking), and mobile for innovative human machine interface, or HMI, (FingerSense) solutions. This reference design was developed with Renesas partner Qeexo, who provided their Automated Machine Learning platform (AutoML) for edge devices.

This reference design offers a Bluetooth® 5.0 SimpleLink™ option with better industrial noise immunity, more range, and less power for industrial applications such as power tools that operate from a 5- cell Li-ion battery. This power stage reference design uses a single Bluetooth low energy (BLE) MCU for both wireless connectivity and three-phase brushless DC (BLDC) motor trapezoidal control, designed in a single board, reducing the BOM and hence overall cost. The design demonstrates the BLE RX sensitivity of –96 dBm even when the power stage is driving motor, showing the robustness of RF performance. The design also demonstrates a small form factor power stage with overcurrent and short-circuit protection by MOSFET VDS sensing.
